As you know, my house has 2 kittens that are bundles of energy- constantly trying to run, scamper, playing with each other (sometimes having needed to be pulled apart because they play too rough), playing with us humans, and playing with Mommy cat. They are at that stage where they also want to play with other things like catalogs, books, and sometimes the TV remote.
Our friends at Purrfect Play sent our kitties some toys to play with. The kittens got the Dust Bunnies (which are wool wrapped into pompoms). Even Mommy cat got a couple of Wool Balls and a Brown Organic Fleece Mouse (crafted from naturally brown organic cotton fleece) for those “needing a break” times. All of Purrfect Play’s items are organic and dye-free to keep your pet healthy without all the icky chemicals that can sometimes be found in our pet toys. They not only offer toys for kitties, they also have doggie toys and gifts for people!
So what was the verdict of the Dust Bunnies? The kittens weren’t too sure at first but when they realized they were toys, they loved them. They even sat up with it in their mouths. Mommy cat loved the Brown Organic Fleece Mouse (maybe because it had catnip in it) and it gave her tons of energy that she was able to play with her kittens. She also loved the Wool Balls, pawing them to where they would roll off the bed. I hadn’t seen her had that much fun in a long time! I snapped pictures of kittens Brother and Sister playing but didn’t get a chance because once Mommy cat knows she’s getting her picture taken, she stops playing.
Because our fur babies loved them, we want you to try them out too! Purrfect Play is giving a Texas Banter reader the opportunity to win 6 Wooly Dust Bunnies.
Neither kitten was given any catnip.

TB Articles: A Feline’s Body Language August 31, 2009Posted by texasheartland in Animals, cats, family, learning, Pets.

Its through nature that every living thing is able to communicate through body language. If a bear is angry, it will stand on it’s hind legs. If a human is happy, they will show it through their facial expression. Or if they’re anything like me, jumping up and down.
Cats aren’t that much different, though sometimes it is hard to decipher what is is your kitty is exactly saying sometimes.
If your kitty is standing in front of you, staring and meowing, they are demanding your attention. He/she most likely isn’t purring at the moment but will after a few moments of petting. But don’t feel bad if you’re in the middle of something and can’t give them your undivided attention. Cats don’t hold grudges for more than an hour. Once they realized that they aren’t gonna get petted at that exact moment, they will go find a nice quiet spot to go nap before they try it again. There are times you want to hold your kitty and they don’t want the attention. It’s only natural to have moods that don’t quite fit each other’s at that exact time.
Some breeds of cats, like the Siamese, tend to be very vocal. So if your furry companion is meowing and rubbing against your legs while you make dinner, it is common sense to know they’re hungry and want to eat. But if they’ve already eaten, then they want what you’re cooking for dinner. Rubbing against your leg when you’re not cooking is a sign that they are in a loving mood and want attention and your earliest convenience.
85% of cats don’t enjoy their stomachs being rubbed. Once they gain your trust, many should not have a problem. If they roll onto their back or even let you rub their tummy, they are saying, “I trust you. Love.”. Princess, Manders’ cat, generally doesn’t enjoy her stomach being rubbed. If she isn’t purring and you rub her tummy, she will kick and swat at your hand. If she’s in a really bad mood, she’ll even try to bite. But if she is purring, she has no problem with you petting her stomach.
Cats are genuinely happy animals. You can tell a cat is happy if they are wagging their tail, purring, or even sleeping with their stomach exposed. But if they get upset or angry, look for a puffed-up body/tail (they thing it makes them look intimidating), and they generally have their ears back. That means, “Step away and quickly!”. Never try to calm a cat that might look like it will attack. Within the hour, it will calm down. If it doesn’t calm down within a few hours, check with your vet for any signs of illness or injury.
Once you get to know your cat (or your cats breed if you have a particular one), it’s not so hard to figure out what they want!
Christmas in July: Dear Santa July 17, 2009Posted by texasheartland in alpha inventions, Animals, Books, cats, Christmas, Christmas in July, dogs, family, Feelings, funny, holidays, life, Pets, random, Siblings, sisters, thoughts, twins.

Note: I took the idea from Manders (aka Confetti Dreams).
It’s July. It’s hot, muggy, and no rain. I’m tired of it and wishing Fall would get here soon. So what does this have to do with you?
Everything! You grace us with your presence every year at Christmas, and getting through Fall just means you’ll visit us once again. But I must remind you: The cats are still sort of afraid of strangers. They are attached to their owners and don’t want attention from anyone unless he or she is part of the family. Of course, that doesn’t include that dog. They hate him. But then again, he loves to chase them. Speaking of the dog, he won’t bite. I promise that. His bark is a lot louder than his bite. Milk and Cookies are in the fridge. Pup likes cookies and kitties like milk. For the reindeer, since it’s going to be a long night, there is some soda in the fridge as well. They could probably use the caffeine.
So what do I want this year? Not much, really. Like my other half, a laptop would be REALLY nice. Then Mom wouldn’t get tired of hearing us argue about who has been on the longest or asking “When am I getting on?”. We wouldn’t have to argue either. True, sisters (especially twins) argue over inanimate objects like computers but after a while, it gets boring. We need something new to argue over! I’m pretty sure if I said more books or a nutcracker (which is on my “just-in-case” list), we wouldn’t have to argue over that and Christmas would end up boring. But of course I’ll take practically anything dealing with books, movies, music (heavy metal or Jagged Ege please), or nutcrackers.
Manders will take George Strait or Kahn (from Kamelot) under the tree this year. Forget any CDs or DVDs by these men. She’ll just take them as they are- in the flesh. She wants them only for a month, but I know her too well and she secretly wants them for more than a month. Please leave a note on how long she can keep them. Oh and if they come with any accessories (guitars, ya know), leave those as well. Mom could probably use a vacation. As far as where, that’s a conundrum. I have no clue! You’re better off asking her. I don’t know what you could get Daddy. You might want to ask him too.
Oh and if it isn’t too much trouble, please make sure that all pets are in the house. Smokie likes to escape. Give the Mrs my best.

Last time as I was drifting off to sleep, I noticed that Smokie wanted attention. I had no problem with this since I knew I would be passed out sooner or later and she would end up leaving me to sleep in her spot under the air conditioner. She laid her head on my hand, which she often does, and just stared vacantly nowhere. As she continued to stare at nothing, I started wondering what she was thinking of.
Do cats think with words? Surely it isn’t as complex as our thinking is, since it’s a lot easier for us. But surely it isn’t just all pictures. I’m sure she doesn’t see her paw and lick it because she saw it. I know she doesn’t look at me and think I’m just a different species that’s stupid. If that were the case, she wouldn’t come to me for attention, food, or just because she doesn’t like that fact that I’m reading. Do cats look at the TV or wall and see the person moving without a thought? I know cats think because when they jump from a high to a low spot, they have to calculate how far and how to jump so they don’t injure themselves. They know when someone is a stranger. They know when they get in trouble with their owners. I know cats don’t think like us- bills, school, work, romance. But in some way, I do think that they have thoughts that pertain to their current life.
Smokie will see Zeus coming up towards her and she has to think of a way to get away quickly. So she’ll look back and forth to see an escape. If she is walking in the room and sees a box or something that isn’t completely stable, she’ll calculate a jump over it.
But what do cats really think of when they’re staring off into space?
Crating Cujo… May 20, 2009Posted by texasheartland in Animals, dogs, family, Feelings, learning, life, Pets, random, thoughts.

Zeus has a nickname- “Cujo”. He has his moments (which stems from his accident) where he gets snippy or frustrated because of his arthritis and he will get a little “bitey” where he will playfully bite your hand. That’s why we named him “Cujo”. Not to mention he has the energy of a 3-year-old full of sugar and will run around like he’s terrorizing a city.
But we recently bought a crate for Zeus. It’s not a place for his “time outs” or for punishment. It’s mostly a place for him to calm down when he has one of his moments, when he needs a more quiet place to sleep, or when we need to leave the house for an hour or two. He has separation anxiety, which he’s always had since he was little, and ends up tearing everything apart when we leave. So to make sure he doesn’t get into something he’s not supposed to, we will crate him. If we plan on being gone for more than an hour or two, we probably won’t crate him because that’s just mean.
But he isn’t exactly taking to it very well. Because there was a lot of noise while we were putting it up, he got scared. He’s never heard noise like that in the house so he didn’t know how to react. So when it was time to introduce him to it, he was very wary. Dad had to try to coax him in there otherwise we bought it for nothing. He eventually went in there, and to get him used to the door being closed, we closed it. He started panicking and after a few minutes, he started calming down. Not extremely calm, but enough to where he didn’t try to move his bed anymore. We opened the door and he immediately came out.
He’s still kind of scared of it and hasn’t gone back in but today, since my Dad isn’t exactly the calmed person, we’re going to try again but not as aggressively. First we’ll work on getting him to where he isn’t so scared of it. Maybe I’ll crawl in and show him there’s nothing to be afraid of. Almost crawled in yesterday but even I wasn’t so sure I could have crawled out.
Sleep does a body good! April 14, 2009Posted by texasheartland in Animals, Beds, cats, Christopher Moore, Feelings, insomnia, learning, life, Pets, random, sleep, thoughts.

The night before, I had fallen ill with what seemed like my cold had settled into my chest. I was terribly sick and on top of that I had no cigarettes. So a cold and no nicotine really made for a crappy day. I hadn’t gotten much sleep lately so I was pretty worn out but I didn’t realize it.
After me, Manders, and Zeus ran a couple of errands, I came home to just lay down. I had no intention of taking a nap. I started watching TV until the next thing I knew, I woke up and another TV show was on. This was only after like 20 minutes at like 7pm. I had fallen asleep! But I couldn’t keep my eyes open so I knew I had to take a nap- took my glasses off and rolled over. I woke up again and the room was dark. I looked at the clock: 1am! Wow, I musta been tired. But it didn’t stop there- I fell back asleep. I woke up about 6am because I felt Smokie laying on top of me and I needed to roll over. I had been alsleep for 12 hours! Now that’s a record! I didn’t realize I had been so tired. But that also meant 12 hours without food or water (ok, much longer since I didn’t eat hardly anything yesterday). So today, I will enjoy food, drink, and probably nothing much else.
So here it is 6:37am and I am naturally the only one awake. Hell, even Smokie went back to sleep. As for me, I couldn’t sleep any longer. Sure, I could try but to be honest- I am now tired of sleeping. Hell, sleeping 12 hours made me tired! But I am feeling a lot better and not as “sick” as I once was. Still a little coughing and a little stuffy nose but feeling tons better. Maybe I’ll actually finish reading Fool by Christopher Moore.
Or maybe I’ll do nothing productive. Well, atleast I know I don’t suffer from insomnia!

It was as if a miracle happened and no miracles happen to my family!
Zeus ate a small bite of chicken yesterday and went outside. Even though he didn’t have a lot of energy, he tried chasing after the outside cat. When me and Twin went to get Father from work, before we even walked out the door, he got up and went to the door like “No, you are not going without me!”. But because he is still sick, we didn’t want to risk it so we left him at home. Today he has eaten more chicken and hasn’t vomited.
I don’t want to say life is getting better but it seems there might be light at the end of this tunnel after all.
I’ve started studying more, haven’t told mom about the license yet, and have had chocolate. Maybe life is getting back on track…. let’s hope.

… I’m on the wrong boat.”. Those are the words of Twin while I was on the phone with Cyber Guy. Frankly, I have to agree. This can’t be all life has to offer!
We consulted with a computer guru and he said that we need a higher watt on the power supply considering how it it is always on. Good point. The problem is that the one we need is $120 and we can’t afford it. Or at least not right now. Who knows when we will. Maybe May…
Zeus is still hanging on. He has a nasty bacterial infection and since the vet said that this kind is a “wait and see” infection, he has Zeus on antibiotics and a liquid diet (since he won’t eat). I feel so bad for him and I’m kinda scared- I won’t lie. I don’t wanna lose him. After all he’s been through, he has to come through this. He just has to.
Ugh. As if life wasn’t depressing enough. I need chocolate.
Need Chocolate… March 30, 2009Posted by texasheartland in Animals, Beauty, Body Lotion, Candles, chocolate, computer, Computers, family, Feelings, life, Pets, Products, Soap, thoughts.

It’s official- I need chocolate. Let me back up and set the scene for you:
I received a gift basket I had won from FiberOne this morning (I won it from a blog but for the life of me, I can’t remember where. I’m sorry!) and it had a chocolate scented candle, chocolate scented soap, chocolate scented hand & body lotion, and chocolate scented bath beads. I hadn’t had anything to eat yet and all I was smelling was chocolate. Oh the chocolaty goodness!
So I waited until I got into the bedroom to light the candle. Bad idea! The whole room started smelling like chocolate, which was making me drool. Then after a shower, I put the chocolate lotion on me. Oh why must I torture myself like this? I need chocolate!
On a serious note, Zeusey isn’t feeling too well. He threw up yesterday morning and threw up this morning. He’s not eating but it’s not like he’s totally incapacitated. We think he may just have a small stomach bug. Let’s hope so.
Still no computer- we’re not even sure WHEN we will get it back. This is frustrating! I need chocolate.
Chocolate in the morning… March 27, 2009Posted by texasheartland in Animals, chocolate, dogs, family, Feelings, food, Guys, life, Pets, Product Reviews, Products, Reviews, thoughts.

I have not had chocolate in a long time. I am a chocoholic. So anytime I get a chance to get my hands on any, it’s “bye bye” chocolate, hello heaven.
When Mom woke up this morning, she proceeded to tell me that besides chicken tenders, we had choclate in the fridge. Did someone say chocolate?! Well, of course I could have had the chocolate first but I decided to have the chicken tenders first because lets face it- if I have sugar before anything else in the morning, ugh. But once I bit into that chocolatey goodness, I could hear angels sing. Now that I’ve had chocolate, I’m good for a couple of days. Nothing beats chocolate in the morning.
Looks like I’ll only be reviewing half of my CLEAN & CLEAR kit soon. Zeus, the psycho dog, chewed through the box and got some of the wipes. Not sure which wipes he swiped, but I know he did. He’s one of these dogs that think that everything is his and we are entitled to share. I don’t think so! He has his stuffed babies, his own bed, his own food, and his own sticks. He doesn’t need anything of ours! Let’s hope he gets out of this otherwise I will start building shelves all over the house. Where’s a sexy handyman when ya need him?

Okay, so I’m not really a math goddess. I’ve been studying the math section of the THEA book and decided to do one of those easy-peasy and it was 20 questions in all. It was one that dealt with fractions (granted, I stayed away from Least Common Denominator because I still have NO clue) and I only missed 1! That gave me a confidence boost as I reach my least-favorite section of math- Algebra. I suck at Algebra. I hate Algebra.
On the bright side, we might have the computer fixed by the weekend. We were able to move things around to where we could get it done. We’re getting the part probably Friday and it might fix the problem. Let’s hope that’s the problem or we’re screwed!
Everyone is doing… okay. Of course, Mom is stressed but what Mother isn’t. Hell, even I’m stressed! Manders is doing okay. She fell yesterday and kinda hurt her shoulder but she’s a-okay. Daddy is doing well. Nothing new there! As for Zeus, Patches, Princess, and Smokie? Still chasing each other and still furry.
Pillowtop or something! March 3, 2009Posted by texasheartland in Bedding, Beds, dogs, family, Feelings, fun, Home Decor, life, Pets, random, thoughts.

Lately I’ve been getting a good night’s rest. Most of it I attribute to my finally getting my body back to where it should be. I’ve eaten enough bananas to make a monkey jealous and have gotten enough rest to make even a couch potato seem like he’s a linebacker in the NFL.
And while I know I am getting a good night’s rest, something bothers me about sleeping. The bed has become so uncomfortable. I know I shouldn’t complain because I at least have a bed to sleep on. But with someone that has arthritis in HER HIP, it’s hard to get comfortable without writhing in pain. As I was laying down today to get my daily nap (Yes, I take daily naps. Trust me, they work.), I started watching something on the Discovery Channel. I think the show was “How It’s Made” or something to that effect. They were making down and feather bed…. stuff. They showed the finally feather pillow and down pillowtop on a nice bed. It looks so pretty! So I vowed at that moment in time (somewhere between conscious and dead to the world) that whenever I had the money, I was going to buy a pillowtop for the bed.
Oh yea, on a really random note: Zeus went to the park for the first time since the accident. He loved it! He ran around a little, didn’t bark at anyone, found a thick pecan stick (yes, we brought it home for him), drank some water… oh he had fun! Which makes me think… How on Earth can dogs get excited about sticks? Unless it’s a challenge and something to chew on? I don’t know. But what do I do know is that he won’t need another stick for a while. It’s atleast 2 inches thick. Yep, he’s gonna be busy.
